On the south coast of England, Portsmouth has been the home of the Royal Navy for centuries. It is also home to several fascinating historic ships, such as the "Mary Rose" (Henry VIII's legendary warship) and the "Warrior," the world's first armored warship (no, it wasn't the "Monitor" or the "Merrimack").
If you’re hankering to breathe that sea air, and walk the deck of a real ship-of-the-line, we have good news for you! The Portsmouth adult exchange arranges for groups of adults from Jefferson County stay in Sister Cities members' homes in Portsmouth for ten days, then, the following year, Lakewood Sister Cities members provide housing for visitors from Portsmouth.

The HMS "Victory," Admiral Nelson's flagship, is the most famous of the historic ships berthed at Portsmouth. A tour of this magnificent vessel helps us to appreciate the courage and fortitude of the men (and small boys) who sailed in ships like these. Those were the days when “learning the ropes” really meant something. |
| Sydney has the Opera House, St Louis has the Arch, and now Portsmouth has the Spinnaker Tower, named after the colorful sails used by racing yachts when running with the wind.
Ride the elevator to View Deck 1 and “step right into the best view in the country. On a clear day you can see for 23 miles or more.” If you dare, take a walk across the glass floor, the largest in Europe.

Not far from Portsmouth is Arundel Castle, the seat of The Dukes of Norfolk, which has guarded the valley of the river Arun since 1067. Set in 40 acres of grounds and gardens, Arundel Castle has been open to visitors seasonally for nearly 200 years. |
| From one of the newest monuments in the world, the Spinnaker Tower, it’s just a short drive or train ride to Stonehenge, one of the world’s oldest (it’s older than the Great Pyramid in Egypt). |
