Lakewood is located in Jefferson County, Colorado, on the western edge of the Great Plains. Lakewood is by far the newest of the sister cities, having been incorporated in 1969. The city was named after Lakewood, New Jersey. Jefferson County itself is older than the state of Colorado. It was organized as one of the original counties of the Colorado Territory in 1861 (Colorado, known as the "Centennial State," became a state in 1876, 100 years after the American Declaration of Independence). Jefferson County is named for Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence.

Although Lakewood is a new city, its history as a community stretches back more than 140 years. The Heritage Center is an outdoor museum that gives the visitor a "hands on" experience of Lakewood history.

Jefferson County is also the home of Buffalo Bill's Grave and Museum, with memorabilia of the great "Wild West Show" days. The grave itself has an interesting history- look it up.

Railroad buffs rejoice! Jefferson County's Colorado Railroad Museum is a treasure trove of railroadiana. Railroad buff's spouses beware- you can easily spend an entire day here!
A little further afield, you can visit the ancient cliff dwellings of the mysterious Anasazi ,gaze upon dinosaur skeletons (in situ and reconstructed), or trek across a sand-dune desert that served as the Sahara for more than one “Foreign Legion” movie!
And, of course, there are those Rocky Mountains! Lakewood is a convenient gateway to the Rockies, just an hour or two drive from some of the world’s finest skiing, hiking, mountain climbing, and whitewater rafting. Don’t want to bother with driving? Take the train to Winter Park for skiing, hiking, and mountain biking, or to Glenwood Springs for rafting and cycling.
