Music Scholar Exchange

The Lakewood, Colorado/Chester, England, Sister Cities Music Scholar Exchange Program and Competition was established in 1986 to further cultural relations between Jefferson County and Chester. The program is supported by the City of Lakewood, Lakewood Symphony, Lakewood Sister Cities, Lakewood Rotary, Lakewood Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jefferson County Schools.

Every year, Lakewood Sister Cities exchanges a gifted Jefferson County student musician with a student musician from Chester, for a two-week visit. The Jeffco musician is given the opportunity to perform with an orchestra while in England, and the Chester musician performs with the Lakewood Symphony.

Our 2008 Music Scholars are Joanna Johnson (USA)
and Jonathan Guy (UK).

Joanna Johnson, the oldest of eight children, began her studies at age 4 with her family, all of whom play stringed instruments. She enjoys presenting musical programs for nursing home residents with her family’s string quartet.

Joanna is a nine-year veteran of the Denver Young Artists’ Orchestra, and studies with James Maurer and Basil Vendryes.

Joanna has won the CSMTA String Competition and the First Plymouth Music Competition, as well as the FMTA Sonatina Festival Advanced Division.

Jonathan Guy is a multi-talented musician. He has played piano since age 5, clarinet since age 9 and saxophone since age 12.

Jonathan is Principal Clarinet in the Wrexham County Youth Wind and Woodwind ensembles, the Wrexham County Youth Orchestra and the Four Counties Youth Orchestra. He is also a member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales and the North Wales Youth Orchestra, playing in venues such as St. David’s Hall, Cardiff. Additionally, he is a member of Saxafaction, a saxophone quartet that has been selected to perform in the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham.
